Warriors likely draft Jonathan Kuminga at No. 7 if there
Report: Warriors very likely draft Kuminga at No. 7 if there originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea
If the Warriors do not trade the No. 7 overall pick in Thursday’s NBA draft, there definitely is a chance Jonathan Kuminga still is on the board when they are on the clock.
On the latest episode of Chad Ford’s NBA Big Board podcast, Ford and guest David Thorpe discussed the 6-foot-8 forward and his fit with Golden State.
Thorpe: “I spoke with some G League players about him. They thought he was a terrific talent. They were very high on his upside. These were really good veteran NBA guys that had fallen out of the NBA and were in the G League. They were really impressed with him.
“I reject any idea that they [the Warriors] are drafting for this year. Kuminga — let him play in the G League the whole year. Move him up on occasion here and there. Let him earn it.
“I think Kuminga would do really well in that culture.”
Ford: “I was really skeptical that Golden State would select Kuminga if he was there. But I’ve been corrected in that thinking. I’ve had people in Golden State tell me that if he’s there, there’s a very high liklihood that they’ll select him.
“And they’ll do exactly what you said there. And they’ll have a ton of my respect for that as well because it’s so easy to [pick] Davion Mitchell or someone who [you] think is gonna be able to step in right away.
“[But] let the young guys figure it out and [think] about sustainability as a franchise, while at the same time trying to compete for a championship. I think it’s a very mature way of thinking about it as well.”

Kuminga, who does not turn 19 years old until Oct. 6, averaged 15.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.0 steals over 13 games for the Ignite last season, while shooting 38.7 percent overall and 24.6 percent from deep.
The Warriors went to Miami late last week to see the Congo native up close and personal.
We’ll find out soon whether the workout and interview impacted the franchise’s perspective.
